The Hamilton-McPherson Fine Arts Center opened with true dramatic flair last week at a ribbon cutting featuring a full marching band, cheerleaders, and more than a hundred representatives from the community. A dedication ceremony last Thursday evening showcased many Bremen alumni returning to the Bremen High School campus to pay respects to their alma mater and its recent addition.

Georgia tourism industry professionals were recognized by their peers this week at the 2012 Georgia Governor’s Tourism Conference. The joint tourism industry conference was hosted by the Georgia Department of Economic Development and the Georgia Association of Convention & Visitors Bureau in Atlanta, Aug. 27-29. More than 500 tourism industry professionals from Georgia’s convention and visitor bureaus, attractions, hotels and more attended the annual conference

On Wednesday, the National Association of School Superintendents announced that local Superintendent Brett Stanton is this year’s first runner-up for the annual “Superintendent of the Year” award. Stanton was in the running for the award with five other superintendents across the nation.

The film being shot last week is called “Grantham and Rose,” and stars the veteran actor Marla Gibbs, best known for her roles on the TV series “The Jefferson’s” and “227”. Also appearing in the film is Tessa Thompson, a star of “Veronica Mars” and the upcoming BBC-America series “Copper”, and Jake T. Austin, who has starred in several Disney TV series, most notable “The Wizards of Waverly Place.”

Shedd was born in Haralson County and graduated from Buchanan High School in 1950. His musical career began with a series of local bands, with which he played across the west Georgia area, until a friend got him a job at an Alabama radio station. That eventually led him back to Haralson County, where he got a job as a DJ at what was then called WWCC (now WGMI.) He eventually became owner of the station and began to hone his craft as a producer

On Thursday, July 12, the Georgia Department of Economic Development (GDEcD) Tourism Resource Team returned to Haralson County to give residents and officials their recommendations for improving tourism and economic development within the county.
The Tourism Team spent three days in May touring the county and seeing what it had to offer. After returning to their offices, they compiled a report of their findings and made recommendations on how to improve in the areas of cultural tourism, heritage tourism, historic preservation, the arts, downtown development, marketing and edutainment.
